General information and History on Coconut Creek Florida

The City of Coconut Creek (incoporated in 1967) is located in Broward County, in South Florida, resting between Miami-Dade and Palm Beach Counties. The City of Coconut Creek is widely recognized as a well-planned community with a unique environmental consciousness touting an abundance of trees, waterways, attractive landscaped roads, beautiful parks, and butterfly gardens throughout the neighborhoods. This is due to the City's progressive planning approach to creating a unique life-style for residents and businesses. Coconut Creek is the first city in Florida and eleventh in the country to be certified as a Community Wildlife Habitat. As the Butterfly Capital of the World, Coconut Creek is home to the world's largest butterfly aviary, Butterfly World; with over 80 species and 5,000 individual butterflies.

The city of Coconut Creek took it's name from the coconut trees that were planted by early developers. R.E. Bateman, one of the developers, named Coconut Creek after combining the names of Miami-Dade County's village of Indian Creek, and the Miami neighborhood of Coconut Grove.

The city of Coconut Creek has a total area of 11.78 square miles, 11.55 square miles of it is land and 0.24 square miles is water (2.04%).
