General information and History on Margate Florida

The city of Margate has a total area of 8.98 square miles, of which 8.81 square miles is land and 0.17 square miles is water (1.89%).

The city of Margate is situated about 12 miles northwest of Fort Lauderdale and 40 miles north of Miami. Founded in the 1950s by Jack Marquese, Margate derived its name from the name of its founder combined with the word "gate" (denoting its status as the "gateway" to western Broward County). Margate became a town in 1955 and was incorporated as a city in 1961. Originally planned for a population of 35,000, Margate today has a size more than 50% larger than its planned number and its population is still growing.
