Blacktop or Asphalt driveways

Blacktop or Asphalt driveways often are used home when they are first built. They are typically the least expensive paved surface a builder can install. But just because they are less expensive does not mean they are inferior.

Proper asphalt driveways start with a thick, well compacted granular base. This base can range between four inches and eight inches. Base materials vary and can be crushed stone, recycled concrete or asphalt (it's crushed and reused). Crushed coarse materials like these have jagged surfaces so they'll compact and lock together in a tough, settle-resistant matrix. A binder like cement dust may be added to hold it together.

A 2-3 inch layer of asphalt is layed over this base and again compacted with heavy rollers soon after.

An Asphalt driveway that is properly installed can last for 30 or more years with little effort. One of their benefits is their flexibility, unlike concrete.

Asphalt can also be made into something beautiful using designs, edging and colors!!!! (ask us!)
