Tile installation
Tile installation is one of those home projects, that unless you are really handy, you should leave to those who install tiles for a living. Here is a quick introduction into some of the aspect of installing tiles.
There are several steps required to lay tiles down correctly, and finish with a smooth, even and level floor. Sure it might seem easy -put the tiles down on top of the cement -No! There are alot more steps to ensure the tiles are laid correctly.
Preparing the floor. Before anything is else is done, the floor must be prepared. This includes removing any obstruction, baseboards, threshold, or old tiles. Once the floor is clean, you have to make sure it is level. If it's not, then you have to fill it in. No one want tiles that are not level.
Installing a backerboard. If you home has wood floors (most 2 story houses do) you will need to install backerboard. This will stiffen the floor so the tiles will not flex and crack or separate.
If the floors are all ready to go, now mix the mortar mix. Depending on the floors and tiles used, there are several different types of mortar to use.
How you start the tiles is important, you want to choose the most center portion of the floor and work from there. This provides a uniform appearance.
The rest of the tile installation process is pretty complex, you have to know how to cut the tiles, lay them appropriately and make sure they are all level and evenly spaced.
